Settle-Carlisle railway: amazingly scenic even in the pouring rain, also the people who sell you terrible coffee and local ice-cream are very friendly and tell you when to look out for the Ribblehead viaduct.
Carlisle: lovely, interesting red cathedral, (castle and art gallery probably also interesting but we didn't have time for them), rather nice teashop.
Having visitors: lovely.
Having visitors go home: lovely.
