Happy Treason And Plot Day
Nov. 5th, 2006 11:43 amNew job starts tomorrow [bites fingernails]. Will have to get up v early, too. Hope I get my hands on this house I've seen which is closer in.
Concomitant to that, have realised why the town where I'm staying feels a bit weird; I've always lived in inner suburbs, and am used to the notion that if you want to go into the countryside, you have to travel. (Especially lately- you can be going out of London for hours before you break free of it!) Here I can walk two minutes down the road and there are fields. It's lovely, but feels unreal- triggering my "on holiday" reflexes rather than "boring everyday life happens here" ones.
Please insert own profound thoughts about town/country dichotomy, modern move to urban life, vigorous cultural life of county towns, plight of farmers, supercilious Southerners, etc. according to inclination, I'm going to sit in the hammock with a book :)
Have bought some parkin, but it's a bit disappointing, too light and ginger-cakish. Might have to see if I can make a proper solid, treacly, oaty one this afternoon to take to fireworks display. I believe they still stick to the good old traditions up here and will be burning a Catholic in effigy, so we may take some sustaining soup as well.
