Books? Wut? I am posting to boast; Mark Thomas just got an honorary doctorate today and did a talk, which I went to, and he was generally very cool and funny- it was about how he got into doing journalism-cum-activism-cum-comedy. He had a long Q and A, and someone asked him if he felt like going to Gaza on an embargo-beating boat and he said "yeah, sounds like fun." (Favourite answer: Someone asked him how to go about getting their teenagers to boycott Coke/be aware of politics, and he went "Beating." And, you know, then a sensible reply.
ETA Oh yeah! There was also the question about how far do you go with personal action- do you boycott McDonald's because they're tied up with Coke? "I'm a member of the metropolitan elite. Boycotting sushi would be a problem for me, but McDonald's...?" And, again, then sensible stuff about how concerted action is more useful than individual boycotts, etc.)
(He wasn't in the PhD gown, but did have a suit on, which I mention because of being shallow. YUM.)

And: a lovely weekend with parent and sibling; a walk on a frozen hill, a wander round foggy York, many bits of home improvement, and a successful cake (first one I've made since...ooh, 2002?)
The council is being its usual speedy self in dealing with cold weather; no grit anywhere to be seen. Arseholes. If I sprain another ankle I will genuinely have a jolly good think about having a go at suing- the one I did last year has only been back to normal for a month or two.
