If one is going to have a party; and if, for example, half a dozen of one's guests cancel, so that one will have too few people to make a good crowded party, and yet too many for a small intimate group; and if, furthermore, three of one's expected guests are INSANELY BORING; for gods' sake take away the chairs, so that people will be able to circulate and nobody will get trapped sitting next to a man who tells you all about how many mason's lodges he belongs to.
(There was a hurried confab of our group in the kitchen with phrases like "oh god, sorry for dragging you along, we had no idea it was going to be like this" and "anybody got a good excuse to get out now", and this is a sad thing to happen to a party.)
