Esteemed sibling and parent were Heroes Of The People Of The Moving Van.

We went to a very nice restaurant over a pub on Saturday- the most memorable thing, for me, was my treacle and apple tart; wasn't sure how this would manifest itself, it turned out to be a normal-looking treacle tart with apple grated into it, rather than separate layers or anything. It was made with part golden syrup and part black treacle, and was deliciouly tart and complex-tasting. Starter of welsh rabbit with wine rather than beer was also interestingly good; main courses were simply good- pheasant with red cabbage and rosemary potatoes doesn't need to be made complicated!

I've got so many books. The pile of boxes of books was the same size as the pile of boxes of absolutely everything else I own (mostly because I don't own much furniture, but still).
I've been buying books for oh, 15 years? And still have many that I owned before that. And get rid of them only with great reluctance. It is not a surprise, therefore, that I would have large quantities. But somehow seeing them all in a heap like that, and realising that a large part of how I will furnish the house has to be based on how much wall space is left after bookshelves are up, is a wee bit scary. My retentions policy may need rewriting. (The notion of stopping buying books, OTOH, is clearly a non-starter. Not cluttering up one's life with Stuff is an excellent idea, but books are not the Stuff. Books are the life.)

DVD player! DVDs! *croons* I have missed you so, little boxes of distraction.

...Ah. The reason I can find spoons but not knives or forks is because I don't have any k&f, isn't it? I only have spoons because I disliked the spoons that came with the shared set of cutlery at the last house. (American size table spoons [not tablespoons] are much nicer). Chopsticks food tonight, then.

Ah books. I have a relative (one of those second cousin relations I can never name properly) who collects books, even ones he doesn't read. He just keeps adding rooms onto his house - there's one sde with a few rooms tacked on one after the other. This freaked my mum out and she always seems to be concerned when coming to my place that I will show the same tendencies :)

My new rule is to keep books I love rather than just one that were OK. I figure we'll both fit into the unit then even with new additions.

Of course my give away pile has sat near the door for ages as it's quite hard to actually take the next step, but I do have a plan :)

I think I'll only keep books I'm likely to reread. The trouble with that is, how can I know what I'll want to reread? You have to dip into the book to see how good it is, right?
*FX: emerges blinking from book four hours later* "Yeah, I'll keep this one. Now, where's the other 200 I need to go through today?"

If you have more than 3,500 books, I will be very suprised. On the other hand, at 50 books to the meter that's 70 meters of shelf space. I see double shelving in your future.

When I have my dream house, there will be compact shelving. Also an orangery.

I think I can fit five bookcases in the spare room, one in my room, two downstairs, (would be three, but I need space for the DVDs) a low one under the stairs... I may do a count estimate when I've got shelves and put them up, but just going on the volume of boxes, I'd say I've got one, two, many, lotsa metres.

Waterproof cellar, rolling shelves, library ladder. It's the way of the future.

BTW, the other comment used the Molesworth icon because it's book-y and you made it- if I thought you had a face like a squished tomato I'm sure I'd have mentioned it to you by now.
