Anybody who wants to be jealous of me for being at the first date of the Ross Noble tour can, because it was brilliant. My face ached after about ten minutes. Scarily enough, he randomly mentioned kazoos in the first couple of minutes and somebody threw one on stage- and someone else in the audience had one as well- left over from Thursday, of course, but bewildering if you didn't know that ("You always have a kazoo with you, what, in case community percussion breaks out?")- 15 minutes of brilliant rambling about kazooing. Being high on Kinder eggs, cutting off sex offenders' hands and replacing them with tortoises, being strip-searched at airports, a running gag about the air-conditioning outlets in the floor, how anything done "Jackie Chan style!" is an improvement, a rendition of Land Of The Giants with the inflatable set, a mime of being in a taxi where he accidentally 'sat' facing the wrong way which then became a five-minute thing about milking a cow on the running-board (my god, there's a definition of "you had to be there"), an appreciation of rollerblading (oh yes, and some of the cast of Starlight Express were in the audience)... I think the improvised bits were funnier than the prepared routines but really it's hard to know. Blimey, he's good. (He's doing a night in Sheffield and two at the Hammersmith Apollo, seats may still be available...)
