Oh, blast the thing. I'm trying to work out what the name is of a plant is that I'd like in my garden, and the decision-tree or photo-identification things I can find all seem to be for native species or else for trees. And of course garden-centre websites all organise their collections by name! This is very annoying.
It's the thing in the left foreground of this picture- it's a commonish garden shrub. Long smooth stalks, ending in big palmate leaves (looking quite like fig leaves.) Any guesses?

I think I know the plant, just not the name. I usually think of it as "probably some sort of ficus", in fact...

Does the library have the RHS plant finder book, which has more pictures than the online version?

Aha, cunning notion! It's nothing more outre than Fatsia japonica (http://images.google.co.uk/images?hl=en&q=fatsia+japonica&btnG=Search+Images&gbv=2). (Apparently you can get variegated ones. Oh well, each to their own.)
