Sep. 10th, 2008 04:26 pm I hadn't realised how much I'd missed going to comedy-gigs-in-pub-cellars (as opposed to tours in theatres.) The room was hot, the beer was expensive, the audience was barely in double figures, and the comedy was OK-to-fair - but I had a great time. The format was "a compere has a little notebook of topics, he and three other comics have a rambling chat", which led to several dud moments when it was just some people talking, but also gave it the sort of unpredictable air of ramshackleness that I like.
Anyway. Will probably go back (now I've found the blasted venue- Leeds likes to be coy about siting its street signs). Also, must get round to going to some of the gigs-in-pub-upper-rooms that will be on once the students are back.
(Yes, any fringe activity in this country depends on pubs. The audience for any given Shakespeare play re-imagined as installation art, or impassioned speaker aiming to paint the town hall a different colour, are probably sloshed. It probably helps.)
